During the final assault on the Alamo, General Antonio López de Santa Anna's assault columns included specially selected pioneers whose dangerous role was to clear defensive obstacles, carry scaling ladders, and create openings for the advancing infantry. Armed with axes and other engineering tools as well as sidearms, these soldiers often faced the heaviest fire as they approached the mission's walls.
This set captures the determination and courage of these specialist troops, whose efforts were essential in allowing the Mexican assault columns to press their attack against the fortified mission. Their inclusion adds historical authenticity to any Alamo display, representing the engineering soldiers who supported the infantry during one of the most famous battles in Texan history.
