SFA050 – Mounted Officer Shooting a Zulu | Thomas Gunn
Set during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, SFA050 depicts a dramatic mounted British officer in the heat of battle. His horse rears beneath him as he leans forward and aims his revolver downward, capturing the confusion and danger of close-quarter fighting on the South African frontier. The Anglo-Zulu War brought the British Empire into conflict with the powerful Zulu Kingdom of King Cetshwayo. British forces initially expected a relatively straightforward campaign, but the disastrous defeat at Isandlwana on 22 January 1879 demonstrated the effectiveness and determination of the Zulu army. Later that same day, the defence of Rorke’s Drift became one of the most famous actions of the Victorian era.
Mounted officers played an important role throughout the campaign, carrying orders, directing troops and moving rapidly between positions. In the confusion of battle, however, officers could quickly find themselves drawn into direct combat. Armed with a service revolver and sword, a mounted officer had the advantage of mobility but could also become a highly visible target.
SFA050 captures one of these intense moments. The rearing horse gives the piece considerable movement and height, while the officer firing downward creates a particularly dramatic battlefield pose. It makes an excellent centrepiece for an Anglo-Zulu War display and works especially well alongside British infantry, Zulu warriors and other figures from Thomas Gunn’s Scramble for Africa / African Wars collection.
