SPT-07B – Spartan Warriors | John Jenkins Designs
The Peloponnesian War (431–404 BC) was one of the most significant conflicts of Ancient Greece, fought between the Delian League, led by Athens, and the Peloponnesian League, led by Sparta.
The war lasted for nearly three decades and transformed the political and military landscape of the ancient Greek world. While Athens relied heavily upon its powerful navy, Sparta and its allies possessed formidable land forces, including the celebrated Spartan hoplites.
During the opening phase of the war, known as the Archidamian War, Spartan forces repeatedly invaded the territory of Attica, while Athens used its naval strength to attack the Peloponnesian coastline.
By the middle of the 5th century BC, Spartan military equipment had undergone important changes. The traditional greaves and cuirass were increasingly discarded, while the enclosed Corinthian helmet was replaced by the more practical, open-faced Pilos helmet.
Spartan warriors were also recognised for their distinctive crimson clothing. A short-sleeved tunic known as the exomis was commonly worn, with the right shoulder left free to provide greater movement during combat.
Unlike many other Greek soldiers of the period, the Spartans were permitted to grow their hair and beards while on campaign, maintaining a distinctive appearance among the armies of Ancient Greece.
SPT-07B – Spartan Warriors by John Jenkins Designs is a four-piece set representing warriors of the Spartan Army during the Peloponnesian War.
Part of the John Jenkins Designs Armies and Enemies of Ancient Greece and Macedonia collection, this set complements the other Spartan warrior releases, allowing collectors to recreate scenes from one of the most important military conflicts of the ancient world.
