This set commemorates the fighting that took place between 17–19 September 1868, during the campaign in which the respected Cheyenne leader Roman Nose was killed. Widely regarded as one of the greatest war leaders of the Northern Cheyenne, Roman Nose was renowned for his courage, battlefield skill, and unwavering resistance to the expansion of the United States across the Great Plains. His death marked a significant moment in the Plains Indian Wars and dealt a heavy blow to Cheyenne morale.

The figures represent members of the prestigious Cheyenne Coyote Society, one of several elite military societies that maintained discipline, protected the tribe, and led warriors into battle. Membership was reserved for men who had demonstrated exceptional bravery and leadership, and the Coyote Society was highly respected for its courage, loyalty, and dedication to defending the Cheyenne people and their way of life.
