Membership carried responsibilities as well as prestige, with society warriors expected to demonstrate courage, protect their community and uphold the traditions of their people.

SSB-28 – Red Shield Society Warrior from John Jenkins Designs portrays a warrior associated with one of these important societies during the turbulent era of conflict on the American Plains.

The Red Shield Society—also associated with the Buffalo Warriors—formed part of a sophisticated warrior tradition in which individual bravery existed alongside strong obligations to the wider community. These were experienced fighting men whose reputation was earned through action rather than simply appearance.
