Few men have shaped the history of Japan more profoundly than Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543–1616). A brilliant military commander, astute politician and patient strategist, Ieyasu brought an end to more than a century of civil war and established the Tokugawa Shogunate, a government that would rule Japan for over 250 years.
Born into the turbulent Sengoku ("Warring States") period, Ieyasu spent much of his youth as a political hostage before rising through the ranks to become one of the country's most powerful daimyo. Following the deaths of Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Ieyasu emerged as the leading contender for supreme power. His decisive victory at the Battle of Sekigahara on 21 October 1600 secured his dominance over rival clans and paved the way for his appointment as Shogun in 1603.
