Japanese battlefield tactics frequently involved massed volleys of arrows fired high into the air before descending upon enemy formations. Such attacks could disrupt advancing troops, weaken morale and create confusion before close combat began.

The long Yumi bow gave Japanese archers exceptional range, while disciplined Ashigaru formations could coordinate their fire under the direction of experienced officers.
