SW037 – ‘Ashigaru Archer Standing About to Fire’ – Eastern Army
Bow drawn and almost ready to release, SW037 captures the instant immediately before an Eastern Army Ashigaru archer sends his arrow towards the enemy.
By the time of Sekigahara in 1600, the bow shared the battlefield with growing numbers of tanegashima matchlock firearms. It had not simply disappeared with the introduction of gunpowder weapons, however, and archers continued to form part of Japanese military forces.
The standing pose works especially well when placed behind kneeling or lower figures, creating several visual levels within an Eastern Army formation.
Combine the archer with spearmen and arquebusiers and the display begins to demonstrate the mixture of weapons available to the forces supporting Tokugawa Ieyasu.
Rather than positioning every missile troop together, small groups of archers and firearms can be distributed around the larger infantry body to create a much more active battlefield.
