The Housecarls were the professional retainers of Anglo-Saxon kings and powerful nobles. Unlike many members of the Fyrd who served when required, Housecarls formed an experienced military elite bound personally to their lord.

SX-66B – Housecarls represents these formidable warriors, whose training, equipment and battlefield experience placed them among the strongest troops in a Saxon army.

Housecarls are especially associated with the two-handed Danish axe, a devastating weapon in skilled hands. Within a larger display, these elite warriors belong at the heart of the shield wall where the fighting would be fiercest.
