TH-07B – Thracian Peltast | John Jenkins Designs

During the 4th century BC, the Thracians were among the most distinctive warrior peoples of the ancient world, occupying extensive territories across eastern and southeastern Europe.

Divided into numerous tribes, the Thracians developed a reputation for their military abilities, particularly as lightly armed skirmishers known as Peltasts.

Unlike the heavily armed Greek hoplites, Thracian Peltasts relied upon speed, mobility and the effective use of javelins, allowing them to engage enemy formations without becoming trapped in prolonged close-quarter fighting.

Their characteristic equipment included a crescent-shaped wicker shield, several throwing javelins known as akontia, and distinctive traditional clothing. This frequently consisted of a fox-skin Phrygian cap with ear flaps, a patterned tunic, fawnskin boots and a decorated cloak known as a zeira.

The effectiveness of Thracian Peltasts was demonstrated during the Peloponnesian War, when lightly equipped infantry became increasingly important in Greek warfare.

One particularly significant engagement occurred at the Battle of Lechaeum in 390 BC, when the Athenian commander Iphicrates employed peltasts to defeat a Spartan hoplite formation.

TH-07B – Thracian Peltast by John Jenkins Designs represents a warrior from these celebrated light infantry formations of the 4th century BC.

Part of the Armies and Enemies of Ancient Greece and Macedonia collection, this miniature complements the other Thracian warriors in the range, allowing collectors to recreate a larger formation of light infantry operating against heavily armed Greek soldiers.
