TH-09A – Thracian Peltast | John Jenkins Designs

The Thracians were a collection of warrior tribes whose territories extended across much of eastern and southeastern Europe. Their military traditions had a considerable influence upon the development of warfare in the ancient Greek world.

Among their most important contributions was the widespread use of Peltasts, lightly equipped infantrymen armed with javelins and small shields.

These soldiers developed a fighting style that differed considerably from that of the heavily armoured Greek hoplites.

Rather than engaging an enemy in a direct contest of strength, Peltasts would advance within throwing distance, launch their javelins, and quickly withdraw before their opponents could close with them.

If the enemy pursued, the lightly equipped Peltasts could generally retreat more rapidly, particularly across difficult terrain. Once the pursuit ended, they would return to harass the enemy formation again.

Their distinctive equipment included a crescent-shaped wicker shield, several javelins and traditional Thracian clothing, often featuring a patterned tunic, a fox-skin Phrygian cap and a brightly decorated zeira cloak.

By the 4th century BC, Peltasts had become one of the principal forms of mercenary infantry employed by Greek armies, providing a more mobile alternative to the traditional hoplite.

TH-09A – Thracian Peltast by John Jenkins Designs represents a Thracian light infantry warrior from this important period of ancient military history.

Part of the Armies and Enemies of Ancient Greece and Macedonia collection, this figure is an excellent addition to displays featuring Thracian infantry, Greek hoplites and the armies of the ancient Macedonian world.
