TMRR-02R – Two Triarii Kneeling with Red Shields | John Jenkins Designs
The triarii were the most experienced heavy infantrymen of the Roman legion during the middle centuries of the Republic.
These veteran soldiers occupied the third and final line of the Roman battle formation, behind the hastati and principes.
Unlike the younger soldiers, who were generally equipped with heavy throwing javelins, the triarii retained the long thrusting spear known as the hasta.
Their primary role was to act as a reserve, providing a final defensive line if the earlier Roman formations were forced to withdraw.
The triarii were traditionally associated with a kneeling or crouched formation, resting behind their shields with spears ready until called upon to fight.
Their reputation was so firmly established that the Romans developed the saying res ad triarios rediit, meaning that a situation had become so serious that the triarii were needed.
During the Punic Wars, these veteran troops formed a vital part of the Roman army's defensive strength.
TMRR-02R – Two Triarii Kneeling by John Jenkins Designs is a two-figure set depicting veteran Republican Roman soldiers kneeling with red shields.
Part of The Roman Army of the Mid Republic collection, this set is ideal for recreating the final defensive line of a Roman legion.
