TMRR-03BY – Centurion and Signifer with Yellow Shields | John Jenkins Designs
The triarii formed the third and final line of heavy infantry within the Roman legion during the Mid Republican period.
Unlike the younger hastati and the more experienced principes, the triarii were veteran soldiers whose battlefield experience made them a valuable reserve.
Traditionally armed with long thrusting spears, the triarii were committed when the earlier lines had been unable to defeat the enemy.
Their position gave rise to the Roman expression res ad triarios rediit, meaning that matters had come down to the triarii, indicating a desperate situation in which the final reserve was required.
Leadership was particularly important in these circumstances. The centurion commanded his soldiers and maintained discipline, while the signifer carried the standard around which the formation could rally.
The presence of these officers and standard bearers was essential to maintaining cohesion during the most difficult stages of battle.
TMRR-03BY – Centurion and Signifer by John Jenkins Designs is a two-figure command set with yellow shields, representing the leadership of a Republican Roman triarii formation.
Part of The Roman Army of the Mid Republic collection, this set is an excellent addition to displays of veteran Roman infantry.
