Mary, Queen of Scots (1542–1587) became Queen of Scotland when she was only six days old. After spending much of her early life in France, she returned to Scotland to rule in a time of political and religious turmoil. Her turbulent reign, forced abdication, imprisonment in England, and eventual execution on the orders of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I, made her one of history's most famous and tragic monarchs. Despite her execution, her son later united the English and Scottish crowns when he became King James VI of Scotland and James I of England, fulfilling the dynastic link between the two kingdoms.
