Ajax the Great, King of Salamis, was one of the mightiest warriors in the entire Greek army. In Homer’s Iliad, he is portrayed as an enormous and immensely powerful fighter, second only to Achilles among the Greek champions.
Ajax was particularly famous for his huge shield and his courage in the fiercest fighting. He confronted Hector in single combat and later played an important role in defending the Greek ships and recovering the body of Patroclus.
