TWTAZ-05 – Derimacheia

The Amazons occupy a fascinating place between ancient mythology and possible historical reality.

To the Greeks they represented a distant and formidable warrior society — women who rode, hunted and fought, challenging many of the conventions of the Greek world. Stories placed them across a vast region extending through Scythia, Thrace, the Black Sea and Asia Minor, where they became associated with great heroes, battles and legendary cities.

Their connection to Troy came through Queen Penthesilea, who brought her Amazon warriors to assist the Trojans following the death of Hector. Arriving during one of Troy’s darkest periods, the Amazons entered the struggle against the Greeks before Penthesilea herself was eventually killed by Achilles.

Centuries later, archaeological discoveries of women buried with weapons among the ancient peoples of the Eurasian steppes have added another intriguing dimension to these legends. While they do not prove the Amazon stories as told by the Greeks, they demonstrate that female warriors were not entirely confined to mythology.

TWTAZ-05 Derimacheia represents another of these legendary Amazon fighters, combining the drama of Greek mythology with the atmosphere of the ancient world.

Available from The Military Workshop, Derimacheia is an excellent addition to an Amazon contingent and a natural companion to the other warriors and personalities of the Trojan War series.

The Amazons occupy a fascinating position between mythology and possible historical inspiration. To the ancient Greeks they were a distant and formidable people — women who rode, hunted and fought as warriors and whose way of life challenged the conventions of the Greek world.

Amazon legends told of campaigns across a vast area stretching through Scythia, Thrace and Asia Minor. They were associated with famous Greek heroes and even with the foundation of several ancient cities and sanctuaries.

Their connection to Troy centres particularly on Queen Penthesilea, who brought Amazon warriors to fight for the Trojans after the death of Hector. Her intervention came late in the war and ended tragically when she was killed by Achilles.

Modern archaeological discoveries of female warriors buried with weapons among the ancient peoples of the Eurasian steppes have added another intriguing layer to these old stories, suggesting that Greek travellers may have encountered societies in which women really did take part in warfare.

TWTAZ-05 Derimacheia represents another of these legendary Amazon fighters, offering collectors a figure filled with both mythological character and ancient-world atmosphere.

Available for purchase through The Military Workshop website, Derimacheia is an excellent addition to an Amazon contingent and a natural companion to the other warriors and personalities of the Trojan War series.
