TWTLK-03N – Lycian Warriors
The defence of Troy brought together an extraordinary alliance of peoples, and among the most respected were the Lycians, led into battle by Sarpedon and Glaucus.
One of the most memorable moments involving the Lycians in Homer’s Iliad comes when Sarpedon speaks to Glaucus about the responsibilities of leadership. At home they enjoyed honour, status and the finest lands, but Sarpedon believed those privileges carried a price — when battle came, they should be seen fighting among the foremost warriors.
It is an ancient expression of leadership by example, and Sarpedon lived according to it. He fought at the front of his Lycian contingent and personally took part in the attack against the Greek defensive works.
TWTLK-03N brings four Lycian warriors together as a substantial fighting group, allowing collectors to give these important Trojan allies the battlefield presence they deserve.
Available from The Military Workshop, this four-figure set can be combined with the other Lycian warriors to create an impressive contingent standing alongside the Trojans in one of mythology’s greatest conflicts.
Far from being composed entirely of Trojans, the army defending Troy was supported by allied contingents from across the ancient world. The Lycians, led by Sarpedon and Glaucus, were among the most celebrated of these allies.
Homer presents Sarpedon as both a formidable warrior and a leader conscious of his responsibilities. In one of the Iliad’s memorable passages, he reminds Glaucus that because they receive the greatest honours at home in Lycia, they must also be prepared to stand among the foremost warriors in battle.
The Lycians proved their worth during the assault on the Greek defensive works, where Sarpedon personally helped breach the fortifications before Hector’s forces broke through.
TWTLK-03N expands this part of the Trojan army with four Lycian warriors, creating a much stronger battlefield presence than the standard two-figure set.
