TWTLK-05N – Lycian Warriors
Among the foreign warriors who came to the assistance of King Priam, the Lycians were some of the most courageous and important allies of Troy.
Their leader Sarpedon was portrayed as a commander who expected no less of himself than he demanded from his men. Rather than directing the battle from safety, he fought at the front of his Lycian contingent and personally participated in the assault against the Greek fortifications.
It was this willingness to share the dangers of his warriors that made Sarpedon such a memorable character in Homer’s Iliad. When he eventually fell to Patroclus, the battle over his body demonstrated the importance placed upon both the fallen king and the honour of the Lycian contingent.
