VMRR-02Y – Veles with Yellow Shield | John Jenkins Designs
The Roman army of the Mid Republic was organised into a carefully structured fighting force, with soldiers equipped according to their age, wealth and experience.
Among the youngest troops were the velites, lightly armed skirmishers whose role was to engage the enemy before the main Roman infantry advanced.
Rather than fighting in tightly packed formations, velites moved forward to throw javelins at enemy troops, attempting to inflict casualties and disrupt opposing formations. Once the heavier infantry moved into action, these light troops withdrew through the gaps between the maniples.
Their equipment was relatively simple, consisting of light javelins, a small round shield known as a parma and a sword. Some wore distinctive wolf skins over their headgear.
The velites were especially useful during the Punic Wars, when Rome fought against the varied armies of Carthage and its allies.
VMRR-02Y – Veles by John Jenkins Designs depicts one of these Roman light infantrymen carrying a yellow shield.
Part of The Roman Army of the Mid Republic collection, this figure brings an important element of Roman battlefield tactics to historical displays.
