VMRR-03Y – Veles with Yellow Shield | John Jenkins Designs
The velites formed the light infantry element of the Roman Republican legion, providing the army with speed and flexibility during battle.
These soldiers were generally drawn from the younger and less wealthy citizens of Rome. Their lighter equipment enabled them to move rapidly across the battlefield, engaging the enemy with javelins before withdrawing behind the ranks of heavier infantry.
The typical veles carried several light javelins, a sword and a small circular shield. Some wore wolf skins over their helmets, creating a distinctive appearance among the soldiers of the Roman army.
During the Second Punic War, Roman commanders relied upon velites to confront enemy skirmishers and help disrupt opposing formations before the main infantry engaged.
They played a particularly important role against armies that employed large numbers of light troops and cavalry.
VMRR-03Y – Veles by John Jenkins Designs represents one of these Roman skirmishers equipped with a yellow shield.
Part of The Roman Army of the Mid Republic series, this figure makes an excellent addition to a Republican Roman formation, particularly when displayed ahead of hastati, principes and triarii.
