VMRR-04R – Velites with Red Shields

The Velites formed the light infantry screen of the Roman legion during the Mid-Republican period. Lightly equipped and highly mobile, they operated ahead of the heavier Hastati, Principes and Triarii, disrupting enemy formations before the main battle lines met.

VMRR-04R – Velites with Red Shields depicts these Roman skirmishers carrying their distinctive red shields. Armed primarily with light javelins, the Velites could advance rapidly, launch their missiles and then withdraw through the gaps in the heavier infantry formations behind them.

This set is particularly effective positioned in front of a larger Roman battle line, helping collectors recreate the layered organisation that made the Republican legion such a flexible fighting force.
