Roman battlefield success relied upon a carefully organised combination of skirmishers and heavy infantry. The Velites were expected to move ahead of the legion, engage the enemy with missile weapons and then withdraw before the main lines entered close combat.
VMRR-04Y – Velites with Yellow Shields captures these lightly equipped Roman soldiers in their distinctive role. The yellow shields provide an attractive variation within a larger formation and can help collectors distinguish different groups of skirmishers across the battlefield.
