VMRR-05R – Velites with Red Shields
The manipular legion of the Roman Republic was designed around different types of infantry working together. At the front were the Velites, lightly equipped soldiers whose mobility allowed them to harass an approaching enemy without becoming tied down in prolonged close combat.
VMRR-05R – Velites with Red Shields portrays these skirmishers preparing to perform that important battlefield role. Their javelins could be thrown into enemy ranks before the Velites withdrew and allowed Rome’s heavier infantry to advance.
The red-shield version can be combined with other Velite sets to create a sizeable skirmish line protecting the main Roman formation.
