VMRR-05Y – Velites with Yellow Shields

Before the Roman heavy infantry closed with its enemy, the Velites operated in the open ground ahead of the legion. Armed principally with light javelins, they attempted to disrupt and weaken opposing formations before retreating to safety.

VMRR-05Y – Velites with Yellow Shields depicts these Roman skirmishers with distinctive yellow shields, providing collectors with another variation when building the lighter troops of a Republican legion.

Placed ahead of the Hastati and Principes, the figures help recreate the different layers of the Roman battle formation and demonstrate that the legion depended upon much more than its famous heavy infantry.
