VMRR-06R – Velites with Red Shields
The Velites were the light infantry of the Roman Army during the Mid-Republican period. Usually drawn from younger or less wealthy citizens, they fought ahead of the main battle line and were equipped for mobility rather than the heavy close-order combat of the Hastati, Principes and Triarii.
VMRR-06R – Velites with Red Shields represents these agile skirmishers equipped with their distinctive red shields. Before the heavy infantry lines engaged, Velites could move forward and shower the enemy with javelins before withdrawing through gaps in the Roman formation.
Their lighter equipment and active battlefield role make them an excellent visual contrast to the heavily armed legionaries behind them.
