VMRR-06Y – Veles with Yellow Shield | John Jenkins Designs

During the middle centuries of the Roman Republic, the Roman legion was organised into different classes of infantry, each serving a particular role on the battlefield.

The velites were the youngest and generally least heavily equipped soldiers. Their responsibility was to move ahead of the main Roman battle line, harass the enemy with missiles and withdraw before the heavier infantry advanced.

Unlike the hastati, principes and triarii, who formed the principal fighting lines, velites operated as light infantry skirmishers. They carried several light throwing javelins, a sword and a small round shield known as a parma.

Some velites wore animal skins, including wolf pelts, over their helmets to distinguish themselves in battle.

These fast-moving troops were particularly valuable during the Punic Wars, when Roman armies faced Carthaginian forces supported by Numidian cavalry, Iberian infantry and other specialist troops.

VMRR-06Y – Veles by John Jenkins Designs depicts a Roman light infantryman carrying a yellow shield.

Part of The Roman Army of the Mid Republic collection, this figure is ideal for recreating the skirmishing troops positioned ahead of the Roman battle line.
