WB79-01 - Officer, 79th (Draper's) Regiment of Foot | John Jenkins Designs

This figure represents an officer serving with the British 79th (Draper's) Regiment of Foot during the Battle of Wandewash on 22 January 1760.

The regiment was originally raised in November 1757 as the 64th Regiment, before being renumbered as the 79th. It was formed using drafts from several existing British regiments and subsequently served in India from 1758.

Commanded by Major Brereton, the 79th Regiment formed part of the British forces operating during the Third Carnatic War, a conflict fought between Britain and France as part of the wider Seven Years War.

At Wandewash, the British army under Sir Eyre Coote defeated French forces commanded by the Comte de Lally, strengthening the British military position in southern India.

This officer figure provides a command element for collectors assembling the 79th Regiment.

It can be displayed alongside the regiment's standard bearers, drummer and line infantry to create a more complete British formation.
