WFCIP-01 - Three French Cipayes | John Jenkins Designs

WFCIP-01 represents three French Cipayes, Indian soldiers serving with the French forces during the Third Carnatic War and the Battle of Wandewash on 22 January 1760.

Like the early Indian soldiers recruited by the British, French Cipayes initially retained traditional forms of dress rather than adopting conventional European military uniforms.

These figures are depicted wearing distinctive muslin headdresses with broad, flat tops and long garments fastened at the side and gathered around the hips.

The unusual headdress is believed to have provided some protection against sword blows and reflects the distinctive appearance of these locally recruited soldiers.

During the Battle of Wandewash, approximately 900 French Cipayes were positioned on a ridge behind the main French line, while a further 300 remained to guard the French camp. Those positioned on the ridge did not take a direct part in the battle.

This three-figure set allows collectors to represent the Indian troops associated with the French military forces in southern India.

It can be combined with other French Cipaye releases and Lally's Irish Regiment to create a broader French Army display.

Set includes: 3 French Cipaye figures.
