WIN74-01 - Captain A. B. Campbell | John Jenkins Designs
This mounted figure depicts Captain A. B. Campbell of the 74th (Highland) Regiment of Foot during the Battle of Assaye in India in 1803, one of the major engagements fought under the command of Arthur Wellesley, the future Duke of Wellington.
Captain Campbell was an extraordinary figure who had previously lost an arm but continued to serve in battle. During the fighting at Assaye, he was described as controlling his horse with the bridle held between his teeth while wielding his sword in his remaining hand. Despite the intensity of the engagement, he survived the battle.
The 74th Highlanders suffered devastating casualties at Assaye, with every officer either killed or wounded. The regiment had originally worn Highland dress but adopted more practical clothing for service in India, including white trousers and black round hats.
This distinctive mounted figure captures the courage and determination associated with Captain Campbell and is an excellent addition to a Wellington in India collection or Battle of Assaye diorama.
