WIS2-01 – M. Estell and Friend captures two members of the 2nd Wisconsin together, offering collectors a quieter and more personal scene from the regiment's early Civil War service.
Soldiers spent only a fraction of their military lives actually fighting. Much more time was consumed by marching, drilling, waiting, eating, maintaining equipment and talking with the men who shared the hardships of campaigning.
That makes a pair such as M. Estell and Friend particularly useful within a larger display. They can be positioned behind the battle line, beside a camp or wagon, or simply gathered with other members of the regiment during a pause in operations.
The 2nd Wisconsin would ultimately become part of the celebrated Iron Brigade, but sets such as WIS2-01 help tell the story at the individual level – ordinary soldiers and the friendships formed through shared military service.
