Before newspapers, radio and electronic communication became universally available, the town crier provided an important means of announcing news and official information to the public.

Traditionally attracting attention with a bell and the famous call of “Oyez! Oyez!”, the crier would deliver proclamations, public notices and important announcements to those gathered around him.
