Erwin Rommel became one of the best-known German commanders of the Second World War through his leadership in North Africa. Taking command of the newly arrived Afrika Korps in 1941, his aggressive style of mobile warfare earned him the famous nickname “The Desert Fox.”

The campaigns across Libya and Egypt saw Rommel's forces confront British and Commonwealth armies in a series of advances and retreats, culminating in the decisive battles around El Alamein.
