Few German commanders are as closely associated with the development and employment of armoured warfare as Heinz Guderian. An influential advocate of concentrated armoured and motorised forces, he held major commands during the early campaigns of the Second World War.

Guderian commanded armoured formations during the campaigns in Poland, France and the Soviet Union, later serving as Inspector General of Armoured Troops and Chief of the Army General Staff.
