By the autumn of 1944, Germany's worsening military situation led to the creation of the Volkssturm, drawing previously exempt men into local defence formations as enemy armies approached the country's borders.

WS184 – Volkssturm “Heil Hitler” depicts a member of this late-war militia giving the Nazi salute, reflecting the political environment in which the Volkssturm was formed and employed.
