Long before railways and established roads crossed the wilderness, rivers and waterways were among the most important transportation routes of the North American fur trade. Canoes allowed traders to move people, supplies and valuable bundles of pelts through country that was otherwise extremely difficult to traverse.
WSP-115 – Fur Trader Canoe captures this essential part of frontier commerce, representing the traders who used the great river systems as highways into and out of the wilderness.
The canoe provides a completely different display opportunity from the mountain camps and trading posts elsewhere in the series.
