WSP-131 – “The End of a Long Day” | John Jenkins Designs

There comes a point when the tools are finally put down, the horses are settled and even the hardest-working inhabitants of the frontier are ready to call it a day.

WSP-131 – “The End of a Long Day” captures that quieter moment.

Rather than portraying the excitement traditionally associated with the American West, this piece focuses on the exhaustion and routine behind frontier life. Miners, labourers, traders and settlers could spend long hours working in difficult conditions, and the opportunity to sit down and rest would have been very welcome indeed.

This is an excellent storytelling piece because it does not require a large action scene around it. Positioned outside a cabin, mine, stable or trading post, it immediately suggests that an entire day's activity has taken place before the moment represented by the figure.

It can also be combined with WSP-133 African American Miner and other working characters to develop a particularly convincing mining or frontier settlement where the inhabitants are shown both at work and during their quieter moments.

Available from The Military Workshop – a wonderfully atmospheric John Jenkins Designs piece capturing the quieter, human side of life in the Old West.
