Few Native American leaders are as famous as Sitting Bull, the Hunkpapa Lakota leader whose name became forever associated with resistance to the expansion of the United States across the northern Great Plains.

A respected spiritual and political leader, Sitting Bull became an important figure during the conflict that culminated in the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. Although he did not command the battle in the conventional military sense, his leadership and influence helped bring together the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne and their allies during this turbulent period.
