Few royal lives were as dramatic as that of Mary, Queen of Scots. Crowned Queen of Scotland while still an infant, Mary spent part of her youth in France before returning to Scotland in 1561.

Her turbulent reign, marriages and eventual abdication were followed by years of captivity in England under her cousin Elizabeth I. Suspected of involvement in plots against Elizabeth, Mary was eventually executed at Fotheringhay Castle in 1587.

Her beauty, tragedy and rivalry with Elizabeth have ensured that Mary remains one of the most fascinating personalities of the Tudor era.
