TR024 – “Mary, Queen of Scots”
Few royal lives contain as much drama, ambition and tragedy as that of Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots.
Crowned Queen of Scotland while still an infant, Mary spent much of her youth in France and briefly became Queen Consort of France through her marriage to Francis II. After his death she returned to Scotland, where political and religious divisions would eventually overwhelm her reign.
Forced to abdicate in 1567, Mary fled to England seeking assistance from her cousin, Elizabeth I. Instead, her presence created a dangerous political problem. As a Catholic with a strong claim to the English throne, Mary became the focus of numerous plots against Elizabeth.
After almost nineteen years in English captivity, Mary was convicted of involvement in the Babington Plot and executed at Fotheringhay Castle on 8 February 1587.
