Auxiliary cavalry were an essential part of Roman battlefield strategy:
- Provided speed and mobility
- Scouted enemy positions
- Protected flanks of infantry legions
- Pursued retreating enemies
- Skirmished ahead of main forces
They worked alongside the heavy infantry of the legions but were not part of them.
The Sword, known as a Spartha was:
- Longer than the legionary gladius
- Designed for mounted combat
- Ideal for cutting and slashing from horseback
- Became more common in later Roman Empire infantry as well
🏇 Combat Role
An auxiliary cavalryman armed with a spatha would typically:
- Scout ahead of the main army
- Harass enemy flanks
- Pursue retreating forces
- Deliver fast, sweeping sword attacks from horseback
Unlike infantry, cavalry relied on:
- speed
- momentum
- reach advantage of mounted height
