Jonathan M. Wainwright IV—commonly called “Skinny” Wainwright—was a senior U.S. Army officer best known for his role in the Pacific during World War II.

He is most associated with the dramatic final chapter of the American and Filipino defence of the Philippines:

  • Commander in the Philippines (1941–1942): After General Douglas MacArthur left for Australia, Wainwright took command of Allied forces in the Philippines.
  • Battle of Corregidor: He led the remaining forces during the siege of Corregidor after the fall of Bataan.
  • Surrender (May 1942): Facing starvation, exhaustion, and overwhelming Japanese forces, he was forced to surrender all Allied troops in the Philippines.
  • POW experience: He spent the rest of the war as a prisoner of war under harsh conditions in Japan and occupied territories.
  • Liberation and recognition: In 1945, he was freed by Soviet forces in Manchuria near the end of the war and later returned to the U.S., where he was honoured with a promotion to full general.

He was nicknamed “Skinny” due to his slim build, a name that stuck throughout his military career.

He is remembered for both the difficult decision to surrender to save lives and his resilience as a long-term POW under brutal conditions.
