Why it was built
In 1940, the U.S. Army needed a:
- Light reconnaissance vehicle
- Capable of rough terrain travel
- With 4×4 drive
- Extremely fast development (initially given just 49 days to design!)
Bantam was the only company to deliver a fully working prototype on time.
The Bantam BRC prototypes
- BRC-60 (1940): First working prototype delivered to the U.S. Army
- BRC-40 (1941): Improved version with stronger frame and modifications after testing
- Built under intense time pressure with many parts sourced quickly from commercial components
Why it matters
Even though Bantam designed the original concept, the Army later gave production contracts to:
- Willys-Overland (which produced the famous Willys MB Jeep)
- Ford (licensed to build the GPW model)
The Bantam design is widely considered the true origin of the Jeep, but Willys became the dominant manufacturer due to production capacity.
Legacy
- Bantam only produced a small number of vehicles
- Its design strongly influenced all later WWII jeeps
- It is remembered as the company that “created the Jeep concept,” even though it didn’t mass-produce it
