Mamoru Shigemitsu was a prominent Japanese diplomat and statesman who played a major role in Japan’s foreign policy before, during, and after World War II.

He is best known for two major historical moments:

  • Pre–World War II diplomacy: Shigemitsu served as Japan’s ambassador to several countries, including the United Kingdom, and held senior positions in Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • World War II injury: In 1932, he was severely injured in a bombing by Korean independence activist Yoon Bong-gil in Shanghai, losing his right leg and later walking with a prosthetic limb.
  • Surrender of Japan (1945): He represented the Japanese government and signed the Instrument of Surrender aboard the USS Missouri, formally ending World War II.
  • Postwar politics: After the war, he re-entered politics and served again as Japan’s Foreign Minister, helping rebuild Japan’s international relations.
  • He remains a significant figure in modern Japanese history because he was directly involved in both Japan’s wartime diplomacy and its postwar reintegration into the international community.
