Few German officers experienced a military career as long and distinguished as Field Marshal Erwin von Witzleben. Having served during the First World War, he remained in the German Army throughout the interwar years before becoming one of the Wehrmacht's most senior commanders during the early stages of the Second World War. Respected as a capable professional soldier, von Witzleben commanded large formations during Germany's western campaigns before later becoming associated with resistance to Adolf Hitler's leadership.
During the invasion of France in 1940, von Witzleben commanded the 1st Army, contributing to the rapid defeat of French forces before receiving promotion to the rank of Field Marshal. Although regarded as an experienced and highly competent officer, his growing disagreement with Hitler's strategic decisions eventually led to his removal from active command. In 1944, he became linked to the failed 20 July Plot, resulting in his arrest, trial, and execution.
