GMPT-06 – Taira Standard Bearer | John Jenkins Designs

The Taira clan was one of the great military and political families of late Heian Japan. Closely connected with the Imperial court, the Taira rose to enormous influence before their rivalry with the Minamoto erupted into the Genpei War.

GMPT-06 – Taira Standard Bearer represents a warrior carrying the identifying colours of the Taira forces. Battlefield standards played an important role in distinguishing rival groups and helping warriors maintain their position during the confusion of combat.

The Taira are traditionally associated with red banners, providing a striking visual contrast to the white colours of the Minamoto. Displaying the two opposing standard bearers together immediately establishes the rival sides within a larger Genpei War scene.

The conflict ended decisively at the Battle of Dan-no-Ura in 1185, where Taira power was broken and the Minamoto emerged dominant.

Now available from The Military Workshop – an impressive John Jenkins Designs standard bearer bringing the colours of the Taira clan to the battlefield.
