The Ashigaru formed the backbone of Japan's great feudal armies during the Sengoku Period. Originally recruited from the farming population, these disciplined foot soldiers developed into highly effective military formations capable of supporting the elite samurai.

Archers often adopted kneeling positions to improve stability and accuracy while reducing their exposure to enemy fire. From behind defensive positions or among advancing formations, they could maintain a steady stream of arrows against opposing forces.
