The Panzer IV proved to be one of Germany's most adaptable armoured vehicles, remaining in production and frontline service throughout the Second World War. On the Eastern Front, however, its crews had to contend with conditions that placed extraordinary demands on both men and machinery.
Snow and extreme cold could make engines difficult to start, freeze mechanical components and turn even routine maintenance into an exhausting task. Winter camouflage became a familiar sight as German crews attempted to conceal their vehicles against the snow-covered landscape.
