SFA062 – Lieutenant Chard
When the Battle of Rorke's Drift began, Lieutenant John Rouse Merriott Chard of the Royal Engineers unexpectedly found himself responsible for the defence of the isolated mission station. With news of the disaster at Isandlwana still unfolding, Chard worked quickly alongside Lieutenant Bromhead to organise the garrison and strengthen the post before thousands of Zulu warriors arrived.
Although not an infantry officer by trade, Chard displayed remarkable composure throughout the battle. He oversaw the construction of defensive barricades, coordinated the movement of troops, and inspired confidence during more than ten hours of relentless combat. His leadership was instrumental in one of the most famous defensive victories in British military history, earning him the Victoria Cross and a lasting place in military legend.
