BJCUMB-01 – William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland
At the centre of the government army during the final campaign of the Jacobite Rising of 1745–46 stood Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, younger son of King George II.
Cumberland assumed command of the government forces pursuing Charles Edward Stuart's Jacobite army and defeated it decisively at the Battle of Culloden on 16 April 1746. The battle effectively ended the Jacobites' attempt to restore the Stuart dynasty to the British throne.
Cumberland's reputation remains deeply controversial. His severe treatment of Jacobite prisoners, supporters and Highland communities after the battle earned him the enduring nickname “Butcher Cumberland.”
BJCUMB-01 provides the central government commander around whom the regiments of Cumberland's Army can be assembled.
