Few British commanders of the American Revolutionary War remain as recognisable – or as controversial – as Banastre Tarleton.

A talented cavalry officer, Tarleton became closely associated with the British Legion, a Loyalist formation containing both cavalry and infantry. His aggressive operations in the southern colonies made him an effective commander, while actions associated with his forces – particularly the fighting at Waxhaws in 1780 – made his name notorious among Patriot supporters.

His distinctive uniform and reputation have made Tarleton one of the most familiar personalities of the Southern Campaign.
